We got to Cairo, hadnt even been there for 12 hours, and our diligent tour director (that would be the mom) had us up and out of bed and on our way to see the pyramids at Giza. I mention that because I think that jet lag is the only possible way to explain this wanton tourist behvior.
It was terrific to say hello to the Spinx.
And it turns out that getting up in the morning is the way to go in Egypt. It gets pretty hot there during the middle of the day, but the way to keep the boys fresh and happy is to see the interesting things while its still cool.
We were guided through Cairo by Shaimaa who took great care of us and put up with all of our tourist activities.
That said, we did not constrain ourselves to just seeing the ancient history. We also spent a lot of time walking Cairo which is a wonderful city. We saw all sorts of things. For example we went into a pharmacy for something - kleenex maybe - and couldnt help but want a photo of their apothecary supply.
Lyell in particular was fascinated by the car repair shops. This is amazing enough, but imagine that his point of reference is Swiss precision and organization. No steering wheels from the ceilings or cats on the floor back here.
When we got hungy - we ate street food. Not exactly sure what this is. Its a dish that includes noodles and rice and a bunch of other items. After youve been walking the city for 12 hours straight its just what you need.
We did manage to get out and see a few of the other sites...
But no matter where we went, trouble followed.
And me - well - I was just happy to be there.
